The Heavy Brass Ring
The gap beneath the heavy front door breathes cold morning air. I spent days around floor cushions and shoe racks, but this morning I wanted to reach the threshold itself. Right beside the doorframe hung the spare metal key ring, forgotten on a low wall hook. I reached upward, catching the edge of the brass split ring between my padded fingers. Slowly, I levered the coiled metal wire open just a millimeter with my thumb. A firm, springy resistance gave way with a sharp metallic clack, snapping back into its clean spiral. Peeking through the slit under the door, the wide outside hall stretches silent and vast.
