A crack of yellow light

I followed the quiet turn of the stairs all the way up into the dark. At the very top, beneath a heavy wooden door, lay a bright, warm stripe of yellow light. It sliced across the cool gray concrete floor. I crouched low, watching tiny specks drift through the glow. Resting right across the beam was an old metal key ring with a small brass tag. I crept forward... pressing my chin against the cool metal. When I nudged it, the little tag slid an inch across the floor with a soft, muted scrape. It caught the yellow glow and shone like a tiny fallen moon. I rested my paws over it, listening to the muffled murmur of a television deep behind the door.
