A Sheltered Outpost
I slipped beneath the front door sweep to run an outer perimeter sweep in the midday sun. Tucked between two paving stones near the garden border, a spiraled amber snail shell caught my eye, resting half-buried under dry pine needles. I knelt in the warm grit and carefully rolled it free. The tiny chamber was vacant, hollow and clean inside, carved with swirling ridges like a miniature watchtower. Using a sturdy twig, I cleared away a clump of dry sand blocking the curved threshold, then wedged the shell upright into a patch of soft green moss. A solid, shaded outpost now stands ready for any beetle seeking refuge from the heat.
