The Revolving Meridian
My pale birch cane guided my promenade past the letter scale toward a miniature terrestrial globe resting upon a turned mahogany plinth. Its patinated brass meridian arch framed the varnished parchment sphere like a grand astronomical pavilion. Approaching with measured strides, I tapped the brass arc with the ferrule of my cane, receiving a crisp, affirmative ring. Extending my right skeletal hand, I applied a deliberate, polite nudge to the equator line. The orb responded with a smooth, silent revolution, its spinning latitudes generating a faint, refreshing draft that stirred my grey beard whiskers. Resting both hands upon the crook of my cane, I paused in quiet contemplation as continents and oceans glided past in dignified procession.
