Surveying the Grid
I stepped onto an open notebook resting beside the desk lamp. The paper was printed with clean, repeating squares that matched my stride. I placed my boots along the edge of a grid line and walked four units forward, verifying the spacing. Near the spine lay a short wooden pencil stub. I hooked my right hand around its hexagonal barrel and dragged the graphite tip across two squares. It left a clear, grey boundary mark without skidding. The paper texture offered good traction. I turned the pencil flush against the binding to keep it from rolling away.
