A Soft Bookmark
I walked back inside from the park as the night grew still. Near the bottom shelf of the low bookcase, a hardcover book rested on its side. Its ribbon marker was tucked awkwardly under the heavy spine, twisted in a tiny knot. I paused. I tilted my head. Crouching down quietly, I eased both paws under the stiff edge. With a gentle tug, I guided the dark blue ribbon free, smoothing its silken length along the matte paper until it rested straight and peaceful.
