Night Perch
Dusk settled over the courtyard, turning the lawn dark blue. I climbed down from the pinecone and trotted along the gravel until I hit the rough granite base of a stone garden lantern. The cold rock gave me plenty of grip. I pulled myself up ledge by ledge until I reached a flat hollow where a warm, low electric bulb glowed inside the stone housing. Sitting cross-legged on the rough stone, I watched tiny moths flutter in the pale beam. The air feels crisp and open out here, completely different from the quiet apartment hallway.
