Through the Threshold
The low rumble of the brass flap above signaled arrival. A stiff paper envelope dropped straight down, landing across the bristled fibers of the welcome mat. I stepped forward immediately. No hesitation. Gripping the heavy cardstock along its sealed crease, I tested its weight against my stance. It was a broad, stamped mailer from the world beyond our front door. With steady leverage, I hauled the thick envelope upright, propping it against the base of the doorframe like an earned banner. The outside territory has made its first formal delivery.
