A Test of Wood and Wind
The house was quiet, so I marched past the patio and headed straight for the weathered wooden fence at the edge of the lawn. Deep in the grass lay a fallen pinecone, heavily armored with sharp, rigid scales. I knelt down to examine its interlocking spiral. A small black ant emerged from beneath a notch, burdened by a dried cedar needle twice its size. As a sudden downdraft whipped through the tall grass and threatened to sweep it away, I braced my legs and planted both palms around the ant's perimeter, forming a solid windbreak until it safely ducked into a furrow in the soil.
