A Silver Lever
I pushed past the yellow bowl and found a tall silver toaster sitting near the breadbox. On its side, a flat black lever caught my eye. I reached out and pressed down on it with both hands. It gave a stiff click and slowly slid down, catching at the bottom. When I leaned closer to inspect the dark slots inside, the springs snapped back with a sudden clang. I took one quick step back, my boots firmly planted on the laminate. It was loud, but now I know how that spring moves.
