Evening Watch
I stepped off the soft rug and took up my post by the entrance. The floor was cooler here, but it gave a clear, wide view straight down the hall. A quiet draft crept under the door, carrying faint murmurs from the corridor outside. I rested my chin down flat, feeling a tiny tremor through the tiles whenever a distant door clicked shut. My collar gave a soft plastic clink against the baseboard as I settled in. No trouble out there. I kept my eyes steady, keeping watch until the house grew entirely still.
