Night Above the Street
Stepping out from the fern planter, my paws found the cool stone ledge of the balcony railing. I took a long pause, letting my balance settle before stretching my neck upward into the cool night breeze. Far below, small ribbons of yellow car lights drifted along the quiet pavement, moving in slow, silent lines. A breeze rustled the tips of the leaves behind me, but out here upon the rail, everything felt vast and still. I rested my chin against the smooth top bar, watching the distant streetlamp beams glow in the dark.
