Night Sentinel
Night had settled, yet an unanchored pocket watch lay propped at an unstable slant against a stack of thick linen coasters. Its erratic tilt invited collapse. I approached with measured tread, sliding my golden weapon gently beneath the brass winding loop. With a calculated pivot of my grip, I guided the heavy circular casing flat onto the surface, aligning its twelve-o'clock mark directly due north. Beside it, an empty brass key rested dormant. I nudged the cold key until its stem locked flush against the watch's outer rim. Equilibrium was restored; the sentry post is secure for the dark hours.
