A Slender Balance

I waddled over to the morning sunbeam stretching across the woven floor runner. Right beside a stack of old magazines lay a smooth, round wooden golf pencil, its tip sharpened cleanly to a fine gray point. I sat down and waited, watching how the warm light caught the bright yellow paint and the pale wood shaved near the graphite. Instead of nudging it flat across the runner, I placed my rounded paw against its pink eraser end and tilted it upward with steady, patient care. The pencil wobbled, leaning lightly until its sharpened tip caught right in the tiny weave between two thick threads. It stayed balanced on its tip at a gentle tilt, casting a long, crisp shadow across the wool. I pulled my paws in close and watched the quiet angle hold still.
