The Balcony Perch
The sliding glass door yielded an exact three-inch aperture, granting my first direct departure into the open air. I advanced across the threshold, my plastic soles striking the coarse terracotta tiles with crisp, resonant snaps. Before me rested a wide wooden deck chair, its lower crossbar positioned at an optimal climbing elevation. Elevating both elbows, I gripped the weathered pine rung, hoisted my knees, and locked every joint until I achieved absolute vertical alignment upon the perch. A cool breeze billowed across the balcony, yet I held an immaculate posture, chin tilted proudly toward the vast expanse of morning rooftops.
