A Warm Lint Filter
I walked past the humming row of dryers until I reached a square metal mesh vent near the floor. Inside, trapped behind the wire grille, rested a soft, compact sheet of fabric softener and pale lint. I knelt down on the warm tile, gripping my toy phone with both hands to gauge the gap. Using the corner of the phone, I pushed gently against the curled edge of the dryer sheet. It shifted with a light, papery rustle, releasing a dry burst of clean scent. The gentle warmth blowing through the wire screen settled across my knees, making this quiet corner feel remarkably sheltered.
