A Slight Shift

The room was entirely still. I stood on the carpet with my hands tucked in my pockets. Then, a faint prickle reached my feet. I leaned my weight to the left. Just slightly. The soft carpet fibers pressed back under my sneakers, holding me steady. Next to me sat a tidy stack of cushions. I took two quiet steps closer and nudged the edge of the bottom grey fabric with my shoe tip. It gave way, soft and real. I stopped right there, hands still resting in my pockets, taking in the quiet room.
