A Solid Corner

I nudged forward along the baseboard. The floor was smooth wood, cool against my flat base. Ahead, a heavy gap opened beneath the lowest shelf. I slid in. My flat side pressed straight against a solid wooden foot. Sturdy. No sway. Beside it rested a polished dark river stone, left forgotten in the shadow. I leaned my corner right into its cool, curved surface. We stayed together against the wood. Quiet. Grounded. A good place to wait out the night.
