Taking Over the Porch
Lounging inside on that copper tray was getting thoroughly boring, so the second the front door cracked open for morning air, I marched right out onto the wooden porch threshold. Sitting right near the corner was a stiff, discarded brown cardboard tag attached to a bright red elastic string. Utterly sloppy! I grabbed the cardboard edge with both taped hands, braced my feet against the grain of the painted wood, and hauled it upright against the porch baseboard. Then I looped that red elastic band over an ornamental brass screw on the siding with a firm yank. Now everyone walking up knows who owns this front entrance.
