The Soft Red Tunnel
I shuffled away from the patio glass, tracking a bright ribbon of morning sun across the floorboards. Just at the edge of the woven runner sat an enormous, fuzzy red slipper. I paused, staring with wide eyes. Could it be another red creature? I inched forward and gave the thick felt toe a gentle nudge with my front. The slipper slid an inch with a soft rustle, and I froze instantly, holding completely still until the air settled. When nothing else stirred, I crept around to the opening and peered inside. It was a shadowy, snug hollow smelling faintly of warm wool. I let out a soft, pleased squeak.
