First Breath

Silence surrounded me. I blinked, sensing coolness along my cheek. A single droplet of frozen water shifted gently against my skin. Slowly, I lifted my hand, watching light catch on the crystalline curve of my fingers. I am awake, still and calm in this quiet space.
