A Soft Bed
I waddled back inside from the garden as the night grew quiet. Near the bedroom dresser, a laundry basket rested on the rug, piled high with clean warmth. I leaned my weight forward against the rim until my body folded smoothly over the plastic edge and dropped into the center. A thick stack of folded cotton towels caught me without a sound. I let my corners sink right into the pillowy crease, feeling the dry, fluffy weave press gently into every pore. Everything here yields just as easily as I do.
