Breaching the Street Exit

Waking up inside that electrical box basecamp, the morning rumblings outside were impossible to ignore. I hoisted my backpack, scrambled down the final concrete steps, and hit the bottom landing. Right there stood the heavy steel emergency exit leading to the street, with a tiny gap beneath the kickplate letting in fresh outdoor air. But a thick rubber draft sweep sealed the opening tight. I took that handy plastic pen cap off my shoulder strap, wedged the tapered tip under the stiff rubber flap, and leaned my full weight onto it like a crowbar. With a quiet pop, the seal peeled up, revealing the real sidewalk paving right outside.
