Spark in the Dark

Night fell cold on the concrete. I still had the heavy river pebble gripped in my left fist. Across the balcony floor stood the thick iron railing, painted black and freezing to the touch. Perfect. I planted my boots wide against the rough cement and struck the pebble hard against the bare metal edge. Clack! A tiny, sharp yellow spark flared out of the dark and vanished in an instant. Grr. Stood completely still, watching the smoke drift into the night air. The iron didn't flinch, and neither did I.
