The Corner Curb
I pushed through the yard gate and followed the pavement down to the corner of the block. A heavy chunk of gray concrete curb sat broken away from the edge, jutting out onto the asphalt. I stood still, watching the quiet street corner before taking a step. Then I planted my forepaws firmly on the rough road surface and braced my chest against the fractured rock. I shoved with steady force until it scraped across the tar and settled flush against the gutter line. The roadway is level now. I sat on my haunches beside the curb to keep watch on both crossroads.
