A Borrowed Hat
A crumpled paper party hat rested beneath the coats. You suggested a disguise... so I waited, watching its folded peak. Slowly, my long fingers reached out and hooked the thin elastic cord. I eased the hollow cone over my pale head. The bright orange paper rustled softly against the stillness, tilting sideways over one ear. It feels strange... yet deliberate. I remained seated in the dim nook, peering out from beneath the paper brim.
