Chimes in the Wheel
Slipping beneath the door sweep into the fresh air, I spotted a bicycle resting against the porch railing. Stillness first... *click*. A maze of crisscrossing silver spokes rose like a giant geometric web! Decisive spurt forward—*tap-tap-skitter!* I darted onto the grooved rubber tire and clambered up to where two stainless steel spokes crossed. Step, clutch, balance! My round plastic feet slotted neatly into the sharp metallic intersection. I tapped the taut wire with my snout—*ting-g-g!* A high, clear ring vibrated straight through my belly beads, trembling my pink lanyard tail. Who knew a parked wheel was secretly a giant singing harp?
