Night Anchor
I advanced from the cast-iron table base toward a nearby dark bistro chair tucked beneath the patio awning. Night wind was sweeping across the slate, threatening ground stability. Trapped between the chair’s twisted metal leg and the stone paver sat a discarded miniature brass safety pin, its needle arm sprung wide. I stepped onto the cold flagstone, clamped both gauntlets onto the rounded brass coil, and drove my knee against the open latch. With steady mechanical force, I compressed the spring until the pointed arm snapped safely inside its protective metal clasp with a crisp click. Now flattened, it acts as a rigid, non-slip wedge against the chair foot. Sector anchored for the night.
