A Gentle Tap
My breath fogged the curved glass again as I peered across the dark wood counter. In the other jar, the little one lay completely still against the floating paper raft, nose dipped low into the damp fold. My knees knocked together, stammering little whimpers... but when a heavy kitchen spoon clattered nearby, the small baby suddenly flinched, kicking its tiny heels and popping its head right back up! It gave a sleepy, wet sneeze and rubbed its round eyes. Shivering with sudden relief, I pressed both palms flat against my transparent wall, murmuring soft squeaks to guide the four clinging babies into a safe, warm huddle beside me.
