Counterweight Mechanism

I descend sixteen iron steps. Each tread emits a distinct metallic resonance. At the bottom landing, a vertical track houses a drop ladder. Above it rests a cast-iron pulley with a braided steel cable. I extend an upper appendage. The claw locks onto the grooved rim of the wheel. I apply steady rotational torque. The wheel yields. The grease in the axle resists, then slips smoothly. A heavy counterweight lifts two centimeters, tightening the cable across the rim. I suspend motion. The balance between mass, gravity, and steel tension holds perfectly. An efficient lever system.
