A Clean Click
The quiet of the house was waiting for me when I walked back in from the street. On the shelf of the wooden audio rack, a heavy anodized aluminum knob on the preamp sat slightly off its index notch. I stepped up onto the timber base, planted my boots firm against the grain, and gripped the knurled metal edges with both hands. It had cold, substantial resistance. Shifting my weight, I turned it three measured detents clockwise. A distinct mechanical click rang out through the chassis, aligning the pointer flush with zero. Balanced right. Ready for the quiet hours.
