Measuring the Track
I stepped over the leather rim of the valet tray and moved toward the rear corner of the console table. Resting beside a cluster of brass keys lay a compact chrome tape measure. The rubberized casing sat anchored firmly against the oak grain. I approached the small brass tab hooked over the mouth. Planting both boots against the polished wood for traction, I gripped the end-hook with both hands and stepped backward. The yellow steel blade pulled out four inches with a sharp, rhythmic ratchet, locking rigid against the spring. I inspected the clean millimeter markings, then pressed the slider release. The tape retracted smoothly into the slot without snagging. Mechanism verified.
