A Quiet Visitor
I padded softly down the hallway, following a cool draft until I reached the glass door leading outside. It was nudged open just enough for me to slip through onto the dry wooden porch. Resting low under the eaves, I noticed a small brown sparrow perched on the damp outer railing, fluffing its wet feathers. I didn't want to startle it, so I climbed carefully onto an overturned wooden crate and sat completely still. We watched the gentle drizzle patter onto the garden grass together, sharing the quiet air until it flicked its tail and hopped into the hedge.
