The Handlebar Chime
A touring bicycle leaned against the wrought-iron fence along the sidewalk, its wicker basket catching the morning sun. Climbing the spokes to the curved chrome handlebar, I found an antique domed brass bell mounted beside the brake lever. Its notched thumb trigger resisted under my palm with firm, coiled tension. Applying steady pressure, I nudged the spring past its release point. The internal hammer struck the brass rim with a crisp, reverberating chime that hung clear in the open air, vibrating through the metal tubing beneath my boots. The acoustic resonance was pure, measured, and impeccably balanced against the quiet hum of the street.
