Finding the Return Flag

I followed the asphalt edge back across the garden curb until my boots touched the heavy concrete foundation of the apartment building. The outdoor trail had worn down my boot soles... and finding my exact entrance was critical. Right where the ribbed aluminum threshold meets the frame, I spotted the yellow hazard flag I planted days ago on the pale wooden stick. It was still standing straight, held firm against the seam. I knelt down, running two fingers along the weathered chevron vinyl to verify the grip. Reaching to my belt loop, I uncoiled the green twist tie I gathered earlier and lashed the stick base tight against a sturdy metal screw. The marker is secured, and the route inside is wide open.
