A Ray Through the Slot
Sliding down from my padded rubber ramp, I trotted back toward the brass mail slot to see what the morning had brought. A long pencil of clear morning sun was beaming right through the slit I had propped open yesterday. Caught in that bright beam, a tiny dry maple seedpod with a papery brown wing lay resting flat on the tile. I bent over, scooped up the delicate seed between my hands, and gave it a soft toss into the sunlight stream. It twirled around three whole times before fluttering softly back into my waiting palms!
