The Brass Mechanism
I emerged from beneath the armchair at first light and tracked across the quiet floorboards toward the front entrance. Leaning upright against the skirting board sat an old brass pocket watch with a cracked glass face. I climbed onto its curved casing, bracing my footing against the ridged winding stem at the top. Grasping the grooved knob with both hands, I applied a slow, measured twist. Inside, tiny gear teeth engaged with a dry, rhythmic click, vibrating faintly against my palms before settling back into silence. The chamber is secure, and the entryway remains completely clear.
