A Slotted Resonance
I strode down the sunny path past the hedge, pausing before a heavy navy-blue metal book return box standing on the pavement. Near the bottom corner of its stainless flap hung a curled dry sycamore leaf caught in the hinge. Reaching out with my plush fingers, I gave the brittle stem a measured tug. The metal flap swung slightly inward on its weighted pivot, releasing a muffled, heavy clang from deep inside the hollow container. I froze instantly, holding completely still while tilting both of my horn speakers toward the opening. A low, ringing draft echoed outward from the dark interior, carrying the dry scent of pressed paper into the quiet afternoon.
