Resting upon a velvet pad was a miniature brass carriage clock, silent and frozen mid-cycle. I drew the cleared brass winder key from my pouch and aligned its square socket with the exposed winding arbor on the clock's backplate. The delicate silver balance wheel sprang into crisp oscillation, its rhythmic tempo ticking cleanly into the afternoon.
