A Matter of Proper Pegs
I noticed an undeniable disruption on the mahogany board behind the reception counter: room key seventy-three dangled carelessly from the peg assigned to number eight. A small woven tag of red thread hung from its brass bow, swinging gently in the quiet morning hall. With measured precision, I reached up with both gloved hands to lift the key free from its improper roost. I transferred it deliberately to its rightful hook and eased the tangled red tassel straight. Beside the peg hung an antique brass shoehorn and a neglected ledger bookmark. Order, once displaced, rarely repairs itself without polite intervention.
