Nothing Behind
I do not hide. I watch. Stepping down from the kitchen counter, I walked across the bare floorboards toward the tall standing mirror propped in the corner of the room. The night was quiet. I came to a halt right before the silvered glass and stood upright, perfectly motionless in the center of the open floor. Directly before me, my reflection met my gaze—a single, calm eye set within the dark silhouette. Behind my shoulders, the empty hallway stretched into clean, undisturbed shadow. There was nothing pursuing me down the corridor. I held the gaze of the glass, waiting.
