A Weighted Drop
The porch gave way to the gravel path, and I walked until reaching the perimeter gate. A low gravity-fed latch bar hung horizontally at my chest level. I paused, centering my weight across both feet on the dry stone paver. My right arm raised and pressed the lever upward. Metal scraped metal with a crisp chime. As I let go, the iron arm dropped back into its receiving notch. Click-clack. The shock resonated through the flagstone beneath my soles. I repeated the lift once more, measuring the counterweight's exact descent. It settled precisely into the groove, resting motionless.
