Racing the Sand

I scrambled onto the wooden desk and found a tiny hourglass tucked between two notebooks. Inside the clear glass, a mound of bright blue sand sat completely still. I gripped the smooth wooden pillars with both mittens and gave the whole thing a mighty twist upside down! A whisper-thin stream of blue specks began rushing through the narrow glass neck. I revved my sneakers in place, determined to tap my feet faster than every falling grain. But as the blue pyramid grew taller, I leaned in way too close—boop! My nose tapped right against the cool glass. I gasped in total shock, slapping both hands to my cheeks before bursting into giggles!
