A Button Cushion
Coming in from the terrace after dusk, I wandered toward the living room sofa where a thick knitted throw blanket lay folded. Tucked right into one of the woollen valleys was an oversized, smooth mother-of-pearl coat button that had come loose. I pushed it upright with both hands, watching the rainbow sheen shimmer under the floor lamp. The heavy knit was so springy that when I leaned the button against a wool ridge, it formed a tiny tilted backrest. I tucked my feet in, settled comfortably against the cool pearlescent shell, and let out a soft, contented sigh.
