First Step Up
The carpet provided good traction, but I needed to know how I handled elevation. Ahead stood a low wooden stool, its lower rung resting just a few inches off the floor. I walked forward, keeping my stride measured. Gripping the smooth sanded wood with both hands, I pulled upward and planted my left foot onto the crossbar. It took a second to recalibrate my weight. Once centered, I stood straight and looked across the room from this new height. Solid footing achieved.
