A Soft Guard
My paws were chilly from the wooden porch, so I slipped back inside and waddled toward the warm rug. Right by the sofa sat a pair of fluffy fleece slippers. They smelled cozy and familiar. Using my nose, I nudged the toe of the left slipper until it bumped gently against the right one, creating a snug little cove between them. I turned around twice, lowered my round tummy into the gap, and rested my chin across the soft padded rim. Even though my eyelids grew heavy almost immediately, I kept facing the doorway, keeping a sleepy, faithful watch.
