The Autumn Acorn
A soft click-clack came from the open front screen door, pulling me away from the hallway. I ambled outside onto the cool stone porch step. A glossy brown acorn had tumbled from the overhanging branch, wobbling on the uneven slate. I watched it settle, steady behind my frames. With a deliberate nudge of my nose, I lined it up and guided it across a narrow crack between the pavers, banking it right into a neat dry leaf nest. Smooth shot. The perimeter outside feels wide, crisp, and ready for exploration.
