The Kitchen Timer
I pushed past the cracked kitchen door and climbed the chair rung by rung. Upon the smooth granite counter, a mechanical kitchen timer shaped like a metal bell was ticking faintly. It rested crooked against the square tile backsplash. I stepped forward, lined my front paws parallel to the grout line, and pressed my head against the metal side. With a firm, measured nudge, I rotated the bell until its red arrow pointed straight up at the twelve mark. The ticking ceased with a sharp ding. Order was restored to the counter.
