A Tiny Cap
The patio screen door had a small gap at the bottom, just wide enough for me to slip through. I took a few slow steps out onto the cool wooden boards. Right in the seam between two planks rested a plump, smooth acorn with a rough little textured hat. I knelt down quietly, tucking my leaf tail against my side so it wouldn't catch the breeze. When I nudged the acorn with two careful fingers, it rolled a tiny bit and stopped against a dried leaf, releasing a faint smell of damp earth.
