Aerodynamics on an Oak Slat
A short walk past the row houses brought me to a quiet park bench facing the midday sun. The oak slats were thick, weathered silver-grey and surprisingly warm to the touch. Resting near one of the heavy carriage bolts was a dry maple samara—a winged seed with a neat, weighted bulb at its base. I stepped up onto the curve of the cast-iron armrest and balanced near the scroll to get a clear vantage. Holding the stem flat against my palm, I tipped it into the crisp breeze. It caught the draft instantly, spiralling on a tight, predictable axis before clipping the edge of the seat. Sound design never fails to deliver. I leaned against the iron curl and soaked up the warmth.
